One Times Square
Home of the famous New Year’s Eve Ball Drop, One Times Square is a globally celebrated landmark. To ring in a new era, the iconic building underwent an ambitious redevelopment that transformed a mostly vacant structure into a mixed-use destination in New York City.
Originally constructed in 1904, the 25-story, 363-foot (111-meter) tall building began as the headquarters for The New York Times, which immediately launched a public New Year’s celebration at the end of December that same year. Over time, the building became known for the Ball Drop and large-scale, eye-catching billboards that eventually covered much of its exterior.

As part of the adaptive reuse and modernization of One Times Square, the redevelopment preserves and enhances a celebrated New York landmark while introducing public experiences, including a 55-foot (17 meter) cantilevered viewing deck that extends above one of the busiest pedestrian and transportation hubs in the world.
The complex urban construction site challenged the project team to develop a structural solution that would streamline erection while minimizing disruption to the surrounding area. The project team incorporated standardized CAST CONNEX Diablo Bolted Splice (DBS) cast steel components into the circular hollow structural steel section (HSS) framing of the cantilevered viewing deck. The pre-engineered castings eliminated the need for complex field welding and facilitated rapid, precise bolted assembly in the field, which was essential for a project that would continue its famous New Year’s celebration during construction. The DBS splices were concealed with steel cover plates to hide the splice locations from visitors walking above and below the viewing deck.
CAST CONNEX DBS components simplified construction logistics, streamlined fit-up and quality control of the spliced connections, and facilitated rapid erection within the highly constrained urban environment of Times Square. The DBS also delivered a repeatable, refined solution for the long-span architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS) viewing deck.
