San Diego International Airport (SAN) Terminal 1 Pedestrian Bridges
The redevelopment of Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport (SDA)marks a transformational moment for one of the busiest single-runway commercial airports in the United States. The redevelopment features modern amenities that reflect San Diego’s culture and environmental values.
More than 12 million annual SDA travelers far exceeds the original 1967 capacity of 2.5 million annual passengers. With passenger volume projected to continue rising, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority initiated a complete re-envisioning of Terminal 1 and its surrounding transportation network to transform the aging aviation infrastructure.

Designed to provide a bright, efficient, and future-ready travel experience, the broader redevelopment included nine roadway bridges, improved vehicular access routes, pedestrian and bicycle pathways, and space for future public transit connections. Two pedestrian bridges connect passengers between the redeveloped terminal and the expanded parking structure.
The pedestrian bridges feature architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS) truss systems. CAST CONNEX pre-engineered Universal Pin Connectors (UPCs) steel castings were specified to provide an AESS detailing solution that enhanced both the structural performance and the visual impact of the steel trusses. The use of UPCs simplified the fabrication of the numerous architecturally sensitive connections by reducing the need for complex platework and extensive weld remediation. The use of UPCs also streamlined the erection of the steel trusses by reducing connection complexity in the field.
By integrating UPCs in the pedestrian bridge trusses, the project team achieved an elegant structural expression that aligns with the terminal’s broader design ethos—balancing functional efficiency with architectural beauty. As the reimagined Terminal 1 positions SDA as a global gateway ready for the future, CAST CONNEX is proud to support the project’s commitment to design excellence, constructability, and long-term performance of public infrastructure.
