The Acrisure Amphitheater in Grand Rapids, Michigan, showcases innovative structural design through its dramatic long-span canopy, created to enhance both architectural expression and acoustic performance. CAST CONNEX played a key role in the project through the design and supply of two 8 ton (7.26 metric ton) custom castings used in the canopy's tri-column base connections.
The architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS) solution provided the strength, stiffness, and geometric freedom required for these highly loaded connections while resolving a complex fabrication challenge and simplifying construction. The custom castings helped bring the architect's vision to life while delivering an elegant and efficient structural solution.
CAST CONNEX was pleased to see the project featured in two presentations at the 2026 NASCC: The Steel Conference, hosted by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), earlier this year. The presentations explore the collaborative design and construction approaches that contributed to the successful realization of this landmark venue and are free to watch through AISC's online learning platform.
Designing an Amphitheater Canopy: From Leaf to Landmark
Presenters: Erica Flannery, P.E. (Progressive Companies) & Jacinda Collins, P.E. (CAST CONNEX)
Learn how the project team transformed an organic concept into an elegant steel structure, addressing load paths, stability systems, fabrication challenges, and erection planning. A special focus includes the engineering and fabrication of the tri-column base connections, which played a pivotal role in achieving both structural performance and architectural design intent.

Acrisure Amphitheater Steel Erection
Presenters: Katrin Bosch, P.E. & Ryan Duncan, P.E. (Ruby + Associates, a Degenkolb Company)
Learn about the construction of the Acrisure Amphitheater. Employing Early Contractor Involvement (ECI), learn how the construction team assisted Progressive AE (SEoR) transition from Conceptual to Final Design and incorporate fabrication and erection efficiencies required to meet the challenging cost and schedule restrictions. Explore how Ruby + Associates assisted in development of the Erection Procedure for the cantilevered truss 2-way system, requiring the use of 4 shoring towers and a step-by-step procedure, which was erected by LPR Construction.
