San Diego International Airport (SAN) Terminal 1 Receives 2026 AISC IDEAS Award for Excellence in Constructability

We’re proud to celebrate the San Diego International Airport (SAN) Terminal 1 being awarded the 2026 AISC IDEAS Award for Excellence in Constructability. Presented by the American Institute of Steel Construction, the IDEAS Awards recognize projects that demonstrate outstanding achievement in structural steel design, innovation, and construction efficiency. This recognition reflects the project team’s ability to deliver a highly complex transportation facility through thoughtful engineering, collaboration, and constructability-driven solutions.

The Terminal 1 redevelopment represents a significant modernization of one of the busiest single-runway commercial airports in the United States. The project reimagines aging infrastructure to better accommodate growing passenger volumes while improving circulation, accessibility, and the overall travel experience. The redevelopment includes nine roadway bridges, improved vehicular access routes, pedestrian and bicycle pathways, and a pair of pedestrian bridges connecting passengers between the redeveloped terminal and the expanded parking structure.  

CAST CONNEX standardized Universal Pin Connectors (UPC) are used for the architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS) truss web members within the pedestrian bridges. By reducing connection complexity and minimizing fabrication effort, the UPCs simplified the design and fabrication of these highly visible details and supported the terminal’s broader design ethos to balance functional efficiency with architectural beauty.
