Inverted Lake, Ned Kahn

Daniels Corporation commissioned artist Ned Kahn to design an environmentally dynamic installation for their Toronto Waterfront development. Situated in a plaza between two buildings, ‘Inverted Lakes’ serves to enhance the overall ambiance and placemaking experience while acting as a windbreak.

The structure includes tree-like features that support a structural steel horizontal canopy featuring over 4.4km of steel cables and 26,000 polycarbonate panels. Each panel reacts with the wind, swaying and spinning to mimic the waves and reflectivity of Lake Ontario. CAST CONNEX Diablo Bolted Splices (DBS) are strategically placed along the horizontal HSS canopy members by the steel fabricator, Heavy Experience.

The use of the DBS supported constructability in the narrow plaza, and the ingenious use of cover plates over these bolted joints helped the splices virtually disappear from view, completing the continuous look and feel of this creative space.

The locations circled show where CAST CONNEX's Diablo Bolted Splices (DBS) are typically located along the length of the HSS members.
